Tesla Recalls 120,000 Cars Over Crash Hazard, Following Previous Autopilot Recall

Faulty Doors Identified in 2021-2023 Model S and Model X Vehicles

Tesla engineers discovered the problem during recent testing. It was observed that the cabin door could unlatch on the non-struck side following an impact. The issue resulted from the inadvertent exclusion of lockout functionality in software updates released in late September 2021. Consequently, the affected vehicles fail to meet federal safety standards for side-impact protection.

Tesla’s Response and Proposed Solution

Tesla has not received any reports of injuries or warranty claims relating to the door safety concern. To address the issue, the company has developed a free over-the-air software update. This update is intended to rectify the problem and enhance the affected vehicles’ safety features. Tesla owners impacted by the recall will be notified by February 17, 2024.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that it has yet to evaluate Tesla’s software solution as it received the update only recently.

This latest recall follows another significant recall initiated by Tesla. Approximately 2 million Tesla vehicles in the US were recalled due to concerns related to the Autopilot feature. The NHTSA conducted a two-year investigation, which concluded that the driver-assistance system did not adequately prevent misuse by drivers.

Offer of Free Software Update for Affected Tesla Models

Tesla is offering a free software update to address the Autopilot issue in certain vehicle models. Owners of the following vehicles equipped with Autosteer are eligible for the update: 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2023 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, and 2020-2023 Model Y.

By implementing these recalls and offering software updates, Tesla aims to prioritize the safety of its customers and ensure compliance with federal safety standards.
