Electric Vehicle Sales Slowdown Forces Automakers to Revise Production Targets

Other Automakers Face Similar Challenges

Rivian, a younger automaker, is expecting to manufacture 52,000 electric vehicles by the end of this year, a far cry from its eventual target of 150,000 per year at its Illinois factory. Likewise, Ford had aimed to produce 600,000 battery-powered vehicles annually by the end of 2023, with a specific goal of manufacturing 150,000 electric F-150 trucks per year.

However, Ford, like its counterparts, is now making adjustments to align their production capacity with market demand. John Lawler, Ford’s chief financial officer, emphasized the need for prudence in the wake of shifting market dynamics during a recent conference call with financial analysts.

Positive Outlook Despite Adjusted Targets

Despite the revised targets, Ford remains confident that the production and sales of its Lightning model in 2024 will surpass the levels achieved in 2023. During the first 11 months of this year, Ford sold over 20,000 electric F-150 trucks, representing a significant increase of more than 50 percent compared to the same period in 2022. Overall, the company’s sales of all electric models have grown by 16 percent, reaching more than 62,000 vehicles.

Industry-Wide Challenges

Tesla’s success has led to traditional automakers investing billions in the development of electric models and the retooling of their factories. However, this increased competition has resulted in price reductions and squeezed profit margins. For example, G.M. recently announced delays in the release of electric versions of its popular Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra pickups, and Chevrolet Equinox sport-utility vehicle.

Ford, on the other hand, is currently constructing four battery plants in the United States. However, the company has decided to scale back the size of one plant in Michigan. Early expectations of high demand for EVs led Ford to accept reservations for over 200,000 F-150 Lightnings by the end of 2021.

In addition to affordability concerns, the availability of charging infrastructure presents a challenge, especially in areas where it is difficult to find charging stations. Consumers without garages or driveways face particular difficulties in accessing personal chargers. Automakers have emphasized their commitment to responding to market demand and adjusting their strategies accordingly.
