Tesla Recalls 2 Million Vehicles in US to Enhance Autopilot Safety Measures

Introduction

Tesla is taking action to address concerns regarding the misuse of its Autopilot advanced driver-assistance system by recalling over two million vehicles in the United States. The move comes after a two-year investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into whether Tesla vehicles adequately ensure driver attention while utilizing the driver assistance system.

Enhancing Autopilot Controls

Tesla acknowledged that the software system controls of its Autopilot may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse. As a result, the company plans to deploy an over-the-air software update to incorporate additional controls and alerts, further encouraging drivers to maintain their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged.

Investigation Findings

The NHTSA initiated its probe in August 2021 due to a series of incidents where Tesla vehicles collided with stationary emergency vehicles. Following their investigation, the agency determined that Tesla’s unique design of the Autopilot system lacked adequate driver engagement and usage controls, thereby increasing the likelihood of system misuse.

Understanding Autopilot Functionality

Tesla’s Autopilot is designed to provide automated steering, acceleration, and braking capabilities within the vehicle’s lane. While enhanced Autopilot can assist with lane changes on highways, it does not enable fully autonomous driving.

Previous Investigations

Since 2016, the NHTSA has opened over three dozen special crash investigations involving Tesla vehicles suspected of using driver systems like Autopilot. Tragically, these cases have resulted in 23 crash-related deaths. The NHTSA has emphasized the importance of driver responsibility and awareness when relying on driver assistance systems like Autopilot.

Recall Details

The software update will be rolled out to approximately 2.03 million affected Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y vehicles. Tesla’s response to the recall was not immediately available for comment.

It’s worth noting that the investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot system by the NHTSA will remain open to monitor the effectiveness of the company’s corrective measures.
