FIFA Launches NFT Collectibles on Algorand and Polygon for Club World Cup 2023

Introduction

FIFA has announced the launch of a new set of NFT collectibles in preparation for the FIFA Club World Cup Saudi Arabia 2023. This release will be made available on both the Algorand and Polygon scaling network platforms, as revealed in a recent announcement.

New Collaboration with Modex

As part of this initiative, FIFA has formed a collaboration with crypto startup Modex. The partnership entails Modex assuming strategic management responsibilities for FIFA’s digital collectibles platform, FIFA+ Collect. Initially launched in 2022 with NFTs exclusively minted on the Algorand blockchain, FIFA+ Collect is set to release its first collection under the new collaboration.

Continued Algorand Presence and Polygon Expansion

FIFA clarified that it will continue releasing NFTs on the Algorand blockchain through its platform. Simultaneously, the organization is expanding its presence to Polygon, allowing for NFT drops through the OpenSea marketplace.

FIFA+ Collect NFT Launch

FIFA+ Collect plans to launch a total of 1,000 NFTs centered around the FIFA Club World Cup. On December 15, the first 100 NFTs, which include the rarest collectibles and offer the opportunity to secure tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, will be minted on Algorand. The remaining 900 NFTs will be made available on the OpenSea marketplace on December 19.

Polygon’s Role and Clarification

While a Polygon Labs representative initially stated that the project had moved to Polygon, FIFA clarified that they are expanding to Polygon while maintaining their presence on Algorand. The FIFA representative emphasized that technological choices will always be made in the best interest of users and to provide the best possible service.

The FIFA Club World Cup

The FIFA Club World Cup kicked off in Jeddah earlier this week, featuring teams from top leagues worldwide, including Manchester City, the English Premier League champions.
