Former FTX CEO Agrees to Stay Away from VPN Technology
According to recent court filings, former CEO of FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, has agreed to stay away from using Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology until his bail terms have been settled. The government has expressed concern over the use of VPNs, as they shield users from third-party monitoring of online data and website visits.
VPN Use for Super Bowl Viewing
Bankman-Fried used a VPN to access the NFL Game Pass international subscription and watch the AFC and NFC championship games, as well as the Super Bowl, on January 29th. His lawyers have stated that the VPN usage was not for any illicit purposes.
Bail Terms Negotiations and VPN Discussions
Both Bankman-Fried and the U.S. Justice Department have requested additional time to negotiate his bail terms, including the issue of VPN usage. Bankman-Fried’s lawyers have assured the court that he will not use a VPN during this interim period.
Restrictions on Encrypted Messaging and FTX Contact
Last week, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan extended temporary restrictions on Bankman-Fried’s bail, which include a ban on using encrypted messaging apps such as Signal and contacting current or former FTX employees. Bankman-Fried’s lawyers have offered a set of bail terms to the court, which were rejected by Judge Kaplan.
