Bing, dubbed as the “AI-powered robot for the web” by Microsoft Consumer Chief Marketing Officer Yusuf Mehdi, is powered by OpenAI’s advanced AI technology, including ChatGPT. Bing’s new and improved search engine will offer faster and more relevant results, making tasks such as shopping and refining queries easier for users. With this update, Microsoft aims to market OpenAI’s technology to its cloud customers and integrate it into its suite of products, including Bing search.

Competing in the Search Engine Market

The competition in the search engine market is heating up, with Microsoft aiming to take a share from Google. The company has unveiled a chatbot named Bard and plans to release AI for its search engine that can synthesize material where a simple answer is not readily available online. According to Daniel Ives, an analyst with Wedbush Securities, Microsoft is looking to win this AI battle and expand its 9% share of the market at the expense of Google.

Practical Applications of AI

At a recent event, Mehdi showed how Bing’s AI-powered search engine will make shopping and emailing easier. The search engine can estimate whether a couch will fit in the back of a car by pulling together data from different sources on the car’s dimensions. With the integration of AI technology, Microsoft hopes to close the gap in the search engine market, where Google currently generates $42.6 billion from Google Search and other revenue, compared to Microsoft’s $3.2 billion from search and news advertising for the quarter ending December 31st.
