This chatroom was similar to countless others on Discord until the leaks occurred. Other factors, such as the desensitizing effect of spending substantial time online during the pandemic and failures at Otis Air National Guard Base, further contributed to this incident.

Discord’s Troubling Trend

Just recently, Discord proactively identified and reported threats made by a 13-year-old boy planning a mass shooting at a synagogue.
Instances like these necessitate a closer inspection of how platforms like Discord tackle criminal activity and extremism while ensuring user privacy. The role of social media in such incidents cannot be understated, as evident in the case of Teixeira and previous violent events.
