Introduction
Luxury sportscar manufacturer Ferrari has announced a partnership with tobacco company Philip Morris International (PMI) to explore ways of reducing the carbon footprint of their factories in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. As part of its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2030, Ferrari is developing its first fully-electric car, set to debut in late 2025. The collaboration, known as Ferrari E-Lab, aims to address the industrial electrification processes related to renewable energy generation, storage, and transformation.
Targeting Production Complexes
Ferrari E-Lab will specifically focus on the production complexes of both Ferrari and PMI in Maranello and Crespellano, located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) apart. While no further details were disclosed regarding the operational or financial aspects of the collaboration, both companies expressed a commitment to researching and developing new technology solutions to optimize energy usage in their industrial processes.
Long-Term Sustainability Goals
Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna emphasized the importance of the collaboration, emphasizing the need for technological advancements to enhance the energy efficiency of their production facilities. Scott Coutts, Senior Vice President Operations at PMI, reiterated the company’s interest in exploring the potential of industrial electrification within their strategic framework. Ferrari has already taken steps towards sustainable practices, such as the installation of a fuel cell plant in Maranello that produces combustion-free electricity, supplying 5% of the energy needed for production operations. Additionally, the development of an assembly plant known as the ‘e-building’ is currently underway.
By teaming up with PMI, Ferrari is leveraging their shared expertise to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable future, all while ensuring their luxury sports cars maintain the iconic features they are known for.
